Rookie is a leading, online magazine for teenage girls. These are a few of the writers' favorite things:
Lazy Oaf Full of Baloney Dress
Marie Lodi — I am in LOVE with Lazy Oaf's Full of Baloney Dress. I love sandwiches
(in fact, I hosted a midnight cartoon sandwich party a few months ago). I think Lazy Oaf is one of
the funnest and coolest clothing brands out right now. I'm always excited to see what crazy things
they come out with. It comes in leggings too!
Jeffrey Campbell Black Suede Antonio
Marie Lodi — Even though I'm a girl who totally lives for summer (even with this
L.A. heat wave), I'm dreaming of cooler autumn weather and these Victorian-style boots from Jeffrey
Campbell. They'd look perfect with tights and a witchy, lace dress!
NG X Reformation Girls Night Bomber Jacket
Marie Lodi — I love bomber jackets, especially ones with cool designs or lettering.
This one by Reformation has "Girls" written on the back. PERFECT for every member of your girl gang!
DIANA "Perpetual Surrender"
Hazel Cills — I love this subtly '80s, electronic band, DIANA. Lead singer Carmen
Elle's voice is beautiful. We debuted a remix of their song "Perpetual Surrender," and it's one of my
favorites of 2013.
La Luz "Damp Face"
Hazel Cills — This really cool, surf rock group features all ladies from Seattle.
Their new LP came out on Hardly Art this October.
Still Corners Strange Pleasures
Hazel Cills — Still Corners is a slightly spooky and pretty shoegaze band from
England — sort of like Mazzy Starr meets a more electronic Slowdive. I'm very into their recent
album Strange Pleasures, which, as the title
implies, is rather David Lynchian.
Mac DeMarco 2
Hazel Cills — This is the only dude on my list because all the teenage girls love
Mac DeMarco. Period. I went to see him live last week, and there were a
bajillion Rookie readers. He
has the crooning voice of a lounge singer with the stage presence of a funny stoner bro.
Gone Home (PC)
Emily Gordon — Gone Home is an adventure game of many secrets. The basic idea is
this: You're a 20-something young woman who's been traveling for about a year. When you return home
to your family, everyone is missing and you find a note from your little sister warning you to not
look for her. As I explored the creepy family home where the game is set, I found myself jumping at
every turn, terrified by the subtle, beautifully rendered, sparse atmosphere as I pieced together
what on earth happened to everyone!
Saints Row IV (PS3, XBox360, PC)
Emily Gordon — Have you ever played a game like GTA and thought, "I love how open
this world is, but I wish it wasn't trying so hard to be realistic"? Well, you'll love Saints Row
IV. This action adventure game does more than just let you shoot at random things — it reminds you
of the insanity that only video games can deliver. In this game, you'll shoot bad guys with a
dubstep gun, climb buildings and then soar to your next mission. You'll get tattoos and nutty
clothing to deal with an impending alien invasion. Also, you're the president.
LIMBO (PS3, XBox360 ,PC, Vita, iOS)
Emily Gordon — LIMBO is a stunning, grayscale platformer that wowed me on PS3 and
has now been released on iOS, so I can enjoy it on my iPad finally. The puzzles are complex without
being too difficult, and the storyline is suitably strange. But the best part about LIMBO is the
graphics, which look like Lord of the Flies redone as an old noir movie. Little children with
glowing eyes set traps, run from spiders and generally wreak havoc on you. And you are also a little
child with glowing eyes, trying to get through this world!
Urban Decay Revolution Lipstick
Arabelle Sicardi — For lips, I'm a loyalist to my favorite formulations, and Urban Decay has me wed to its new Revolution Lipstick (my favorite colors are Jilted and Anarchy). Beautiful, lux (and practical) packaging with a moisturizing, pigmented and long-lasting formulation means it's often mistaken for a really beautiful lip stain — it lasts multiple meals without touchups. I'm a huge fan.
TokyoMilk Femme Fatale Collection — Bulletproof No. 45 Handcreme
Arabelle Sicardi — I am a huge perfume freak and love how the right scent totally
bathes you in goodness. Right now, I'm obsessed with TokyoMilk perfumes and hand creams because they
smell unexpected and amazing and have beautiful, beautiful packaging that sits right at home with my
designer perfumes.
The Flamethrowers by Rachel Kushner
Amy Rose sPiegel — This book is ideal for those obsessed with literature as well
as the recent
history of art and music. When a novel is set in 1970s New York City, it's got to involve all kinds
of cultural treasure troves — but that's not even close to the most remarkable thing about it. Its
protagonist, Reno, is simultaneously fearless, capable, directionless and self-questioning in the
way that most of us are when our adult lives are just getting started. Your relationship to Reno as
the book progresses might feel strikingly similar to the one you have (or had) with yourself.
Unlovable by Esther Pearl Watson
Amy Rose sPiegel — Not only is this book named after a Smiths song (always a plus),
but it also contains some of the funniest, most sympathetic and detailed accounts of the hairier
(sometimes literally) parts of being a teenager — and it’s still relevant despite the fact that it's
set in the 1980s. Its creator, Esther Pearl Watson, claims it's based on a diary that she found in a
gas station, but even if its protagonist, Tammy Pierce, is a complete fiction, she definitely feels
real to me.
