perspective: Letter from Canada

Some of the most style-savvy, global fashion brands call Canada home — and so do some of the most interesting new media sites.

At a recent Toronto Fashion Week event, editors asked industry insiders, “What is Canadian style?” Interestingly, everyone had a totally different point of view. To someone who doesn't understand Canada, you might assume that there is no "style." And yet some of the most style-savvy, global fashion brands call Canada home — brands such as Smythe, famous for über-tailored jackets; the funky chic of Pink Tartan; and the Mimran empire starting with Club Monaco and most recently Joe Fresh. There is definitely a subtle tapestry of style here in the great white north.

Meanwhile, those seated in the front rows of Canadian fashion weeks are anything but old-school editorial giants. Rather the Canadian front row is reserved for some of Canada's most quietly influential fashionistas. Putting a true spotlight on what makes up Canadian style are some of Say Media Canada's most prized fashion partners:

Canada Partner Spotlight

Afiya

Afiya Francisco, creative editor at The Style House, is everywhere a fashionista wants to be. In addition to writing the insiders look on fashion for her own site, she runs from shoot to preview as a freelance stylist and in her "spare time" appears as a guest fashion consultant on well-known Canadian shows such as Global's The Morning Show, Steven & Chris and ET Canada. While The Style House is small, Francisco's Twitter following tops at more than 3,500, confirming what everyone who matters already knows: She's part of the influential fashion elite.

Michelle

Beautyeditor is one of Canada's most popular style and beauty sites. With more than 70,000 unique visitors a month, this "blog" is dangerously close to being a household name. Michelle Villette, editor and founder, is no stranger to style; she's an acknowledged star blogger, whose work has serious industry cred. Villette has been featured in ELLE Canada, FLARE, FASHION Magazine, Chatelaine, Canadian Living, The Globe and Mail, Toronto Life, Glow, Today's Parent and Best Health, and she has appeared as a guest speaker on CosmopolitanTV, Canada AM and Breakfast Television. Villette's straight-goods approach to the latest fashion trends and beauty products — complete with fads, personal mishaps and snarky celebrity beauty commentary — is a resounding hit with Canadian fashion- and beauty-trend followers.

Marcus

Born and raised in Montreal, Marcus Troy, editor at The Marcus Troy Experience, has taken his enthusiasm for fashion and culture and created a cult following. Where most fashion and culture bloggers are content to simply report on culture news or showcase fashion images, Troy creates engaging content for his readers on site and in-social. And with more than 30,000 monthly uniques and an Instagram following of just over 31,000, clearly it's working. His fans follow everything he puts out, from self-produced fashion shoots, videos, reviews, random musings, and updates from his near-constant travels to factory tours, trade shows and other industry events. Troy has been featured extensively in GQ Italia, Ebony, Esquire, The New York Times and other publications.

While fashion insiders can quibble on what truly makes Canadian style, there is one thing everyone can agree on: It's unique and personal, and the country’s tastemakers have a very distinctive point of view.

Welcome to the Canadian Front Row: We’re just getting started.
